Chris Jelf has recently joined CMD as a Financial Assistant and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge to maintain our company’s financial health and ensure resources are applied throughout the business efficiently and effectively where possible.
We are delighted to have Chris on board and excited for what he will bring to the role and to CMD collectively. We caught up with Chris to find out a bit more about him:
Tell us more about your career/education to date?
I actually started my career as a history teacher after completing a History degree at Keele University in Staffordshire. After a couple of years teaching I decided it wasn’t for me and left the profession, after which I completed my training in accounting in the evening whilst working for a very successful manufacturer in Stoke-on-Trent. When it was revealed that the Accounts department was being outsourced around the same time I was finishing my Accountancy course, it seemed the right time to move across the water to Northern Ireland to live with my girlfriend and I was lucky enough to secure a job at CMD.
What is the most important thing you have learned in your previous roles?
I’ve always found it’s important to work with a happy, positive group with a strong team mentality. I’ve found this to be a great recipe for success in previous roles and the best way to create an effective, enjoyable environment to work in. This is one thing I’ve always looked for when applying for roles and so far CMD has provided exactly that.
What has been your career highlight to date?
I was successful in achieving a Distinction in my AAT course which I was proud of, although I do believe my greatest successes are yet to come!
Do you have any hobbies or interests?
I am a keen Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner, a grappling based martial art which is quite similar to Judo. I train most days and compete in tournaments as much as I can! I am currently a Blue Belt which is the 2nd of the 5 belt ranks in the system, training at an excellent gym in the local area. I have been lucky enough to win a number of competitions and have a nice collection of shiny medals to show for it – and even a belt! It can take 10, 15, even 20 years to get to Black Belt so I have a long road ahead of me but training has already given me a positive mindset for hard-work and I’m lucky to have found a sport that I love , and one that enables you to make life-long friends and test yourself on a daily basis.
Tell us how you plan to help CMD grow and develop?
I will be working to manage and develop the daily and monthly processes of the financial function to ensure the smooth running of the business, this will include laising with suppliers, contractors, project managers, and our customers to ensure we achieve completion on time whilst being responsive to our customer’s needs.
Are you excited about the role?
I’m very happy to join CMD, it’s an exciting time to join the company as the team shows a passion for growth and is already thriving in a competitive industry. Working within the experienced team at CMD will greatly help to improve my knowledge and skills as an Accountant. It’s evident the Directors, John and Niall have a big vision for the company and are passionate and hungry for further success, I’m pleased to be part of this vision.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Keep moving forwards – Things will go wrong, not everything will go to plan, but if you keep moving forwards progress is inevitable.
